UMK | Uusien materiaalien keskus | Center for New Materials

What is UMK?

Interdisciplinary materials science is an area crossing the department boundaries at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology. Center for New Materials, UMK, promotes cooperation between the laboratories doing research, generating joint projects or giving teaching in the field of materials science.

UMK is a leading knowledge hub in Finland in material sciences and technology consisting of 32 member laboratories at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology and altogether 600 researchers working in these laboratories.

UMK is a separate institution founded by the member laboratories to act as a link between research groups. Among other things, UMK helps in the coordination of the instrument resources within the Campus area.

UMK is led by the board that consists of eight members, both from inside the university and from the external interest groups. Even more insight from the industry is brought by the advisory board. The everyday activities of UMK are handled by director and coordinator(s).
